Mary Tate - President

Mary hails from Kenosha, WI and is proud member of Dartmouth’s Class of 2012. Mary loves to perform! She enjoys singing, dancing, acting and playing the violin. During her freshmen year of college she co-founded Dartmouth’s step team, Staccato, that performed for fun and to raise awareness and funds Autism Speaks. She also made her way to the stage performing with the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir and in musical productions like Urinetown and Hairspray. Whenever she is studying, you will be sure to catch her singing or dancing.

At Dartmouth, Mary studied Biology with a concentration in Genetics and Theater. Before starting medical school, Mary was a Richard D. Lombard Public Service Fellow and worked with One Heart World-Wide (OHW), a non-profit organization working to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in the most remote, rural parts of the world. During her time with OHW, she did medical anthropology fieldwork in Guachochi, Mexico with the Raramuri indigenous people focused on paternal influence on pregnancy outcomes. Mary has a passion for health care disparities work and is currently pursuing research opportunities to investigate the crisis of infant mortality of African-Americans in the United States. In her home state of Wisconsin, African-American children bear 4-5 times the infant mortality burden as their white counterparts. In addition to work in health disparities, Mary loves to mentor students interested in medicine. In the spring of 2013, Mary began collaborating with the Pre-Health Advising Office at Dartmouth, Black Alumni at Dartmouth Association, professors and students to start the “Pathways to Medicine” program to provide resources and mentorship to students underrepresented in medicine. Given her passion for work in underserved communities and mentorship, she could not be more thrilled to work with SNMA right as we are celebrating 50 years of diversifying the face of medicine!
